Welcome and Overview: Mathematical Argumentation!

This set of three self-guided learning modules introduces you to mathematical argumentation.

Session 1 explores what a mathematical argument is. Session 2 considers what mathematical argumentation can look like in the classroom. And Session 3 focuses on tasks, providing the opportunity to consider how tasks can be designed to support student participation in argumentation.

The goals of Session 1:

A. Establish a shared definition of a mathematical argument and argumentation

B. Identify and analyze different approaches to an argument

The goals of Session 2:

A. Connect argumentation to a classroom context

B. Analyze students’ arguments and the relationship between argumentation and conceptual understanding

The goals of Session 3:

A. Analyze tasks for the features that will support student argumentation

B. Select, adapt and modify tasks to support student argumentation
